Common Core Posters!

Since I have been back from my honeymoon, I have been super busy– working on curriculum writing…oh yeah, and did I mention, my brother and sister-in-law had a beautiful baby girl, Reese!

Besides loving this cute baby, I have been compulsively back-to-school shopping…

In the past week, I have been to Staples, Office Max, Target, Walmart and our local teacher store! In all fairness, I lost a ton of things after our school got hit by Hurricane Sandy last fall…especially a lot of the back to school posters, bulletin borders, etc that I had and I just now realized were gone.

Today I finally got to work on some of the posters and things for my classroom too. Thanks to my mom for helping with the cutting and laminating! I decided that I am using my neon chevron as my main color scheme in my room this year. I printed all of the standards posters, trimmed and laminated them.

Then I put them in order and divided them by domains. I punched a whole in each one and put them on rings.

I plan on hanging these on my board each day on a hook! Last year I had all the posters printed and slid them into a page protector I had mounted on the board. While a good idea in theory, for someone as unorganized as me, I never put them back in the right order (and now they are washed away in the Atlantic Ocean thanks to Old Sandy). I figured this would be a MUCH better way to stay organized and post the standards.

I also remade my white board headers for my daily information for my students. I just have to pick up more magnets for the backs.

We have a day 1-6 schedule so I made cards with numbers 1-6 that I can flip each day. They will also be on a magnetic hook like I am using for the state standards.

I also created this super cute *MATH* bunting with my new editable template pack (55 DIFFERENT backgrounds!) that I figure I can post some place in my room.

I haven’t decided if I am going to attach it with ribbon or magnets on my board. I have to get into my new classroom to check it out before I decide. You can download it for free HERE!

One last thing! I love my Scotch Laminator. It’s amazing! I use it SO much…but I hate spending tons of money on the laminating pouches! I found these generic ones on Amazon and I used them for the first time today and they are AWESOME…and so much cheaper! Just thought I would share the wealth 🙂

Pi Day 2013

Any big plans for Pi Day?! I seriously LOVE Pi Day. Unfortunately, my students will be taking a mock state assessment on Pi Day. We are introducing geometry over the next week though, so I will definitely be doing some fun Pi activities.
Check out my Pi Day activities from last year:

sample picture-231I also added a super fun “Working with Circles” activities and interactive notebook pages to my TpT store. Check it out 🙂

So what has been going on around you? We are lost in the world of test prep and it is AMAZING to see my students using their Interactive Math Notebooks as references. I MUST post about them soon.

Mean, Median, Mode + Range

Mean, median, mode + range is the bane of my existence. Seriously. The only math test I ever remember failing was in 5th grade. It was all mean, median, mode + range. I mixed the four up and got pretty much every question wrong. This year I have been working SO hard to get my students to master these concepts! It’s not that they don’t know HOW to find each one, they just forget which is which. One of the things we do is we chant as a class different things to help us remember. For example for mean, we YELL:

Me:  “Step 1”

Me: “Step 2”

Silly I know, but it helps my more auditory learners REMEMBER.

Another way we work on this is by constantly spiraling. All year long homework’s, Do Nows, etc have range, mean, median and mode questions.

We currently have off for President’s Day today (it was supposed to be a week long February break, but the vacation was cancelled due to the days we lost from Hurricane Sandy). I made a fun Presidential themed mean, median, mode and range worksheet which will be my Do Now when we return to school tomorrow. CLick on the link below to download:

Hurricane NEMO?!

Hope everyone on the East Coast is surviving Hurricane Nemo! Snowed in here with my family, enjoying a day of hanging out in my PJs and getting ready for the school week. My brother, formally a Florida resident for the past 4 years, did a pretty good job with the snowblower.

Screen Shot 2013-02-09 at 5.12.59 PMThis week we worked on integers! It was so great to see my students get excited about integers and fully grasp the concept of negative and positive numbers. I took parts of my Introduction to Integers pack and turned them into stations.

Some of the stations included:

Students filled out foldables in their interactive notebooks

Groundhogs Day

I have something very important to say. How many people thought Groundhogs Day was a legit holiday until they became a 4th grader? Just me? Seriously! I thought it was a big, real holiday like St. Patrick’s Day, until I left the beauty of the colorful, crafty, fun primary grades. When I saw that Little Red’s Schoolhouse (my new favorite clipart store) made this adorable Groundhogs Day clipart, I HAD to make a little freebie for you guys!
